More than a decade ago, at the height of the popularity of TV shows like Moonlighting with its sparkling banter and sexual tension, I wrote a few mysteries. It's a genre I still love to read, but my writing veered toward romance and women's fiction, though not before I'd written nine Amanda Roberts mysteries and four Molly DeWitt mysteries. It's the latter that to this day has caused much consternation among my readers.
You see in the back of the fourth Miami-based book -- Hot Schemes -- there was a teaser chapter for a fifth book. Dedicated fans have searched high and low for the missing book. As it turns out, it was never written. The publisher and I parted company, but no one thought to pull that teaser chapter. Thus, the greatest mystery of my career.
I loved writing about single mom Molly DeWitt and the very sexy Cuban-American detective with whom she matched wits. In each book I tried to showcase a different aspect of Miami culture along with solving the murder. And lest you fear that there will be lots of graphic, bloody details in these books, not to worry. I'm much more interested in the characters, the motivation and the relationships than in the forensics. For me, writing about Molly and Michael was just plain fun
For those of you who missed the four books that were published, there's great news. Hot Property, Hot Secret, Hot Money and Hot Schemes are now available as eBooks. If sales
boom, maybe that missing fifth book will finally be written. We'll see.
Meantime, for those of you who like to collect first editions -- even of paperbacks -- or just prefer to read print editions, just click on comment below, register to post and say you'd like to read about Molly. We'll do a random drawing from all entries at 9 a.m. Saturday to choose three winners who'll each receive a complete set of all four books. Good luck!
